In an in-depth conversation with Melodic Dancers, Toronto-based DJ, producer, and founder of Reckoning Records, Hasan Ghazi, opens up about his musical journey, influences, challenges, and what lies ahead for his career and label. Known for his seamless blend of house and techno, Hasan also shares exciting news about his forthcoming EP “State of Mind,” a collaboration with Filip Zarkic and Madness Factory.
The Evolution of Hasan Ghazi’s Sound
Hasan’s journey has been shaped by his exposure to diverse cultures. Having spent six years in the bustling nightlife of Shanghai before returning to Toronto in 2020, Hasan found himself redefining his sound. His music is known for infectious rhythms and hypnotic melodies, and he emphasizes the importance of continually evolving as an artist:
“Traveling and playing music in different parts of the world has been eye-opening. Every country brings a different energy, and I try to incorporate that into my sets and productions. It’s all about adaptation and evolution.”
This global influence has given Hasan a unique perspective, blending Western electronic music with the rhythmic depth and emotional elements of his Pakistani heritage.
Collaboration on ‘State of Mind’ EP
Hasan also spoke about his latest project, the “State of Mind” EP, which marks a significant collaboration with Filip Zarkic and long-time Reckoning Records artist, Madness Factory. Hasan shared how this collaboration came to life:
“Madness Factory brought an idea he was working on with Filip Zarkic to me, and I immediately saw its potential. I infused it with my own distinct style, and together, we created this minimal yet powerful melodic techno track with a great groove.”
This EP, featuring deep atmospheres and infectious rhythms, promises to be a standout release for Reckoning Records.
Challenges and Opportunities in Running Reckoning Records
Since founding Reckoning Records, Hasan has embraced the challenges of running an independent label in a competitive market. He explains that while visibility can be difficult to achieve, being independent allows greater creative freedom.
“One of the biggest challenges is getting visibility in a market that’s oversaturated with talent. But being independent allows us to take creative risks without the pressure of following trends or commercial expectations.”
This philosophy has driven the label’s success, attracting the attention of industry giants like Paul Van Dyk, and achieving multiple Beatport chart hits.
What’s Next for Hasan and Reckoning Records?
Looking to the future, Hasan aims to continue evolving his sound and exploring new collaborations. With plans to grow the label’s global presence and expand into live events, Reckoning Records is gearing up for an exciting chapter:
“For Reckoning Records, I want to expand our reach globally and bring more emerging talent into the spotlight. We’re also exploring live events and expanding our presence in the underground scene, so there’s a lot on the horizon.”
